Alinhe Formation

Alinhe Fm

Period:
Permian

Age Interval:
P1-2, (17), Cisuralian Epoch (Early Permian)

Province:
Heilongjiang

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located on the bank of the Alin River in the area of Heihe City, Heilongjiang Province. It was named by Zhu Ciying in 1957, and was first cited publicly by Chen Zhiming and Jiang Chunfa in 1963.

Lithology and Thickness

Volcaniclastics. Lower part of the formation is composed of grey-black and grey-green tuffaceous conglomerates, breccias and sandy slates, intercalated with rhyolitic porphyry. Upper part of the formation consists of black and green tuffaceous sandstones, sandy conglomerates and slates, intercalated with acidic volcanic rocks, with the slates yielding phytolites (siliceous plant remains). Thickness is 1024 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Volcanics

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Disconformable contact -- The basal part of the formation is composed of sandy conglomerate characterized by black clayey cement, being in a disconformable contact with the underlying Upper Devonian (?) volcaniclastic rocks.

Upper contact

Unknown contact relationship with the overlying strata. Next higher regional is the Taxi Fm.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in the areas of the Alin River on the upper reaches of the Gongbiela River and of the Honghutu River, Heihe City. Coeval with lower part of Xiaohelihe Gr volcanics in same region.
